Application and Selection

Apply for a position in the Delegation 2012-2013!

Are you ambitious, motivated to develop yourself and interested in global affairs? Then apply for our Delegation 2012-2013! The application procedure is aimed at selecting a diverse and balanced group of the best students in the Netherlands. This allows us to guarantee that you will be part of a group of motivated and bright students. We welcome talented applicants from all educational backgrounds. Follow our three steps to a UNL application below!

Please note: the Summer Selection for the Delegation 2012|2013 has closed. Do you still want to apply for your spot in the upcoming Delegation? Our Fall Selection round will take place in August and September 2012 for all applicants that were unable to apply for the Summer Selection! Please check our website regularily for updates on the Fall Selection round.

Step 1: Who are we looking for?

We seek a group of approximately thirty highly motivated students. A place in the delegation means that you will be part of a select, diverse and ambitious team of young people, eager to develop themselves. Moreover, you will receive intensive trainings, a challenging academic programme and will work towards participation in Model United Nations conferences at Oxford and Harvard University. If you fit the following criteria, we look forward to receiving your application!

  • Are you a student who combines ambition with ideals?
  • Are you motivated to experience personal growth?
  • Do you have the motivation and discipline to work hard?
  • Are you willing to dedicate 16 hours per week to the programme?
  • Do you have sufficient command of the English language?
  • Do you have affinity with the United Nations and its ideals?

Next to that, there are a number of essential formal Requirements. Please check carefully whether you meet the following formal requirements:

  • Are you registered at a Dutch (research) University from September 2012 to February 2013?  (Please note that this excludes applied universities (HBO))
  • Are you willing and able to pay the Participation Fee and other expenditures?

NB: candidates for the delegation are not judged based primarily on past achievements and/or study results. Rather, you are selected based on motivation, talent and affinity with the aims of the programme.

Participation Fee and other expenditures

Participation Fee.   If you are accepted to the delegation, we will require that you pay a participation fee of 250 Euros for the program. This fee is your contribution to a highly rewarding program. It is not used to cover any personal costs you should make, such as travel expenses.

Other expenditures.   Obviously, travelling to the United Kingdom and the United States of America for two weeks is not for free! Tickets, accommodation and food will cost you approximately 1800 Euros. Expenditures for leisure activities vary from person to person.

Financial aid.   Fortunately, there are good possibilities for financial aid. Foremost, most universities will give you a substantial amount. Our board can help you find the right body in your university. Of course, you are free to search for any additional sources of financial support. If you start, right after you have been selected to our delegation you will have ample time to acquire funds for the trip.

Step 2: Application procedure

  • Summer Selection

The selection procedure is organized in three rounds. You will be asked to send a written application; based on this written form we will invite candidates to the first selection round.

The first selection round consists of locally organized Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) simulations in Nijmegen, Maastricht, Delft and Amsterdam. It serves as an initial test of your potential as United Netherlands delegate. If you pass the first round, you are invited to come to Nijmegen and participate in a simulation of the Security Council, during which a selection committee will be present. Finally, you will be invited for an interview, where we will assess your personal suitability for the program. If you pass this third round, you will be part of the United Netherlands Delegation 2012-2013!

  • Fall Selection

For those of you that were unable to participate in the Summer Selection, United Netherlands organizes the Fall Selection in September 2012.

The Fall Selection is organized in one round. You will be asked to send in a written application. Since the Fall Selection only covers one day, a preliminary selection will be made from the written applications. For the first part of the round you will participate in a simulation of a United Nations Body. It serves as an initial test of your potential as a United Netherlands delegate and to see how strong your strategic, verbal and social skills are. The second part of the round consists of an interview, where we will assess your personal suitability for the program. If you pass this round, you will be part of the United Netherlands Delegation 2012-2013!

Step 3: Apply!

Thank you for your interest in our program! The application for the summer selection 2012 has closed. In August, the Fall Selection will be opened which will allow you to apply for the last spots in our delegation! Check our website regularily for updates on the Fall Selection!
